THE HISTORY OF AVALON HILL

In 1952, a Baltimore ad man named Charles S. Roberts sat down to design a game that would let two players simulate the tactical dance of a modern battle. What came out of that project — a modest little box called Tactics — quietly invented an entire hobby.

By 1958, Roberts had formalized the company as Avalon Hill, and its releases Tactics II and Gettysburg introduced the world to hex maps, cardboard counters, combat results tables, and zones of control — the DNA of every wargame published since. For the next four decades, the small Harford Road office in Baltimore would be the beating heart of American strategic gaming.

Avalon Hill's catalogue is a monument. Diplomacy taught a generation about betrayal. Squad Leader reinvented tactical WWII gaming. Panzerblitz, Third Reich, Civilization, Acquire, Kingmaker, Titan, and Advanced Squad Leader defined not just genres but the cultural memory of hobby gaming. The company's magazine, The General, ran from 1964 to 1998 and built the first real community of strategy gamers.

Financial pressure in the 1990s finally caught up with the company, and in 1998 Hasbro acquired Avalon Hill and closed the Baltimore operation. The imprint survives today under Wizards of the Coast, releasing revivals and new editions — but the true legacy of Avalon Hill lives on every table where dice are rolled over a hex map.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Avalon Hill?

Avalon Hill was an American game publisher founded in 1952 by Charles S. Roberts in Baltimore, Maryland. It's widely credited with inventing the modern hobby wargame and dominated the field of historical and strategic board games for nearly fifty years.

Who founded Avalon Hill?

Charles S. Roberts, an aspiring military-history author, self-published Tactics in 1954 and formed The Avalon Game Company shortly after. Renamed Avalon Hill in 1958, the company shipped Tactics II and Gettysburg that same year, effectively creating the hex-and-counter wargame category.

Why is Avalon Hill historically important?

Avalon Hill invented core wargame concepts still used today: the combat results table, zones of control, hex-based movement, and stacking rules. It also founded The General magazine in 1964, which built the first true wargaming community and turned strategy gaming into a lifelong hobby for a generation of players.

What happened to the original Avalon Hill?

After decades of financial pressure and shrinking hobby sales, the original Avalon Hill Game Company was sold to Hasbro in 1998. Hasbro shuttered the Baltimore operation and eventually folded the Avalon Hill imprint into Wizards of the Coast, where it survives today as a boutique label for revived classics.

Are Avalon Hill games still played?

Absolutely. Titles like Squad Leader, Advanced Squad Leader, Diplomacy, Titan, and Acquire have thriving communities, active tournaments, and continuous reprints. Many of their systems are considered the foundations of modern wargaming and Euro-style design.
